Marguste, Anti (b Eavere, 5 August 1931).

Composer. In 1953 Marguste graduated from the faculty of Economics of the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute and in 1960 from the Tallinn Conservatory where he studied composition with Mart Saar and Anatoli Garshnek. Since 1962 he is teaching music theory at the Georg Ots Tallinn Music School.

Marguste has written large scale works as well as short pieces, symphonies and choral songs.

His musical self-expression has a lot of characteristics quite rare in music: luscious humour, smile, irony but also peaceful contemplation. Sometimes the meaning of titles of his works – Oreleelo, Orelend or Oreloits – is a puzzle.

Marguste’s choral music reveals his distinguished talent for choice of text. A lot of his texts originate from the Estonian folklore.
