| Vihmand, Mari (b Tartu, 1967).
Composer. In 1990 Vihmand graduated from the Tallinn Conservatory where she studied composition under Eino Tamberg. Thereafter she was a post-graduate student of Lepo Sumera at the Estonian Academy of Music. In 1995 she began her studies at the Lyons Conservatory with Gilbert Amy and Philippe Manoury. First of all Vihmand has written chamber music but her opera and symphonic pieces have been even more successful. Her opera Lugu klaasist [A Story of Glass] was awarded the Estonian State Cultural Award in 1995. In 1996 Floreo for symphony orchestra won the first prize at UNESCO’s International Rostrum of Composers Competition in Paris in the category reserved for composers under 30. An orchestral piece Les fenêtres sur un paysage oubliè / Aknad unustatud maastikule [Windows On the Forgotten Landscape] was commissioned by the Netherlands’ Radio Chamber Orchestra in 1997.
