| Kuulberg, Mati (b Tallinn, 9 July 1947).
Composer. Kuulberg studied composition at the Tallinn Conservatory with Anatoli Garshnek. He graduated from the conservatory in 1971. Whereas he has also studied string instruments he has worked as a violinist in the Estonian State Symphony Orchestra from 1966 to 1974. At the moment he is a composition teacher at the Tallinn Secondary Music School. Kuulberg’s musical language is stylistically varying. He has written music in many genres, but the most important part of his output is instrumental chamber music. His pieces for solo instruments – violin, flute, clarinet – are often performed. Although his music is sometimes technically complicated, it offers the performers a variety of possibilities for interpretation. His musical language is influenced by the rhythm of speech, Estonian folk music, medieval polyphony and aleatorics. His particular interest has been impressionistic harmony. He has a good sense of form. Selected works: * Composition for Five, short ballet (1971)
